What's new

Release notes for every version of Wallset. Updates are free for everyone — Pro included, forever.

1.1

More ways to browse and switch

Wallset 1.1 adds two new picker layouts, complete appearance control, faster ways to switch, and smarter online downloads — while keeping the picker focused and uncluttered.

Picker & appearance

  • Two new layouts: Preview List pairs larger rows with a dedicated preview, while Horizontal presents your selection as a centered filmstrip. Alongside Grid and List, Wallset now has four picker layouts.
  • Your chosen layout now persists across Local, open Collections, and Browse results.
  • Follow your Mac’s appearance or pin Wallset to Light or Dark across the picker, Settings, and onboarding.
  • Scroll indicators are now optional — hide both the indicator and its gutter without changing how scrolling works.
  • Keyboard navigation is simpler and more predictable: arrow keys move, Enter applies, and Space previews.

Switching & automation

  • Press ⌘R to apply a random wallpaper from your filtered Local results or the collection you have open. When possible, Wallset avoids choosing your current wallpaper.
  • Auto-rotation can now draw from your entire library or a specific collection. Collection rotation is available during the Pro trial and with Pro.
  • The menu bar now puts Open Wallset, Shuffle Now, Previous Wallpaper, Pause or Resume Auto-Rotation, Open Wallpapers Folder, Settings, and Quit close at hand.
  • Previous Wallpaper restores the prior per-display arrangement from your current Wallset session.

Smarter downloads

  • Browse now recognizes downloads by their source and image ID. Applying the same result again reuses the saved file instead of downloading another copy.
  • Clear status messages tell you whether a wallpaper was downloaded or an existing copy was applied.
  • Wallset remembers each download’s provider, author, source page, local file, and download date — even when you rename the file.
  • New context-menu actions let you apply a downloaded copy, reveal it in Finder, or return to its original source page.

Helpful finishing touches

  • Allow notifications and Wallset can remind you one day before your Pro trial ends.
  • The native review prompt now waits until you’ve used Wallset over time, and Settings has a permanent Rate Wallset link.
  • Settings now shows the installed version and build, App Store listing, privacy policy, and acknowledgements for Wallhaven, Wikimedia Commons, Pixabay, and Unsplash.

1.0

Initial release

Everything Wallset is on day one — a Rofi-style wallpaper switcher that lives in the menu bar, not a settings app.

The switcher

  • Global hotkey — Space by default, re-recordable to any combination — summons a floating picker from anywhere on your Mac.
  • Type to filter by filename, move with arrow keys, preview full-size with Space, apply with .
  • Thumbnail grid or compact list (⌘L), plus an info panel (⌘I) with filename, dimensions, file size, and date added.
  • One keystroke applies to every connected display, with a smooth 0.4-second crossfade on manual switches.

Library

  • Point Wallset at any folder — ~/Pictures/Wallpapers works out of the box with no permission prompt.
  • Drag images straight from Finder into the picker. JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, and TIFF supported.
  • Rename files or move them to the Trash from the picker, with a confirmation step — nothing is erased permanently.
  • Auto-rotation picks a random wallpaper on a timer, from 5 minutes to 2 hours, and pauses while your Mac sleeps.

Make it yours

  • Eight accent colors, rounded or square panel corners, and toggles for filenames and selection outlines.
  • Menu bar icon your way: monochrome, full-color, or text-only.
  • Launch at login, and a four-step guided onboarding that sets up your folder and hotkey.

Pro

  • Collections — group wallpapers into named sets and make any collection your active source.
  • Browse and download from Wallhaven, Wikimedia Commons, Pixabay, and Unsplash without leaving the app. Three work instantly with no key; Unsplash takes your own free key. Every source shows only the filters it really supports, and photographers are credited.
  • Eleven extra transitions for manual switches: Slide, Zoom, Wipe, Ripple, Iris, Diamond, Horizontal Bars, Clock Wipe, Star, Corner, and Cross.
  • Hold to apply to just the display under your cursor, and auto-rotation gives each display its own independent wallpaper.

Trial & purchase

  • Every install starts with a 7-day Pro trial automatically — no account or card. Settings shows the days remaining.
  • Pro is a single one-time purchase of $7.99 — no subscription. Restore Purchases works across your Macs.
  • When the trial ends, everything above the Pro line keeps working free, forever.
