Live vs. dynamic vs. rotating wallpapers on Mac
Learn the difference between live, dynamic, rotating, and transition-based wallpapers on Mac—and which of them Wallset supports.

These terms are often used as if they mean the same thing. On a Mac, they describe different ways a desktop background can change. The right app depends on whether you want continuous motion, time-based imagery, or a library of still images that changes periodically.

What is a live wallpaper?
A live wallpaper stays in motion. It may loop a video, render a Metal scene, respond to the pointer, or animate particles continuously. That usually makes playback efficiency, battery use, and pausing behind full-screen apps important parts of the product.
Wallset is not a video or continuously rendered live-wallpaper engine. Its supported library formats are still-image formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, and TIFF.
What is a dynamic wallpaper?
Apple commonly uses “dynamic” for a desktop scene whose appearance changes with time or light and dark mode. People also use the word more loosely for any wallpaper that changes, which is why search results often mix dynamic images, videos, and rotating photo libraries together.
What is wallpaper rotation?
Rotation picks another still image after a chosen interval. Wallset can rotate from the entire local library or, during the Pro trial or with Pro, from a specific collection. Its interval choices run from five minutes to two hours.
What are wallpaper transitions?
A transition is a brief visual effect during a manual switch. Wallset Free includes a crossfade; Pro adds 11 more styles. These effects do not turn the wallpaper into a live background, and scheduled auto-rotation changes are always instant.
Which one should you choose?
Choose a live-wallpaper app if you want constant motion or video playback. Choose Wallset if you have a still-image library and want a fast hotkey picker, organization, online discovery, transitions during manual switches, or automatic rotation.
